3 songwriting tips for the independent musician

Hey everyone! So today, I’m going to give you guys some songwriting tips for the independent musician.

Before we get started, let’s have our moment of silence.

At this time, I would like all of us to take a moment of silence and pray to God to strengthen our hands to work hard at the things in our lives. Take a minimum of 5 minutes and pray for this.

Now back to the show

Independent songwriting tips

So songwriting is songwriting no matter where you are at.

Whether you’re an indie artist or on a major label roster, you need to write songs that are hits.

With that being said, often times as indie musicians, we don’t have the same type of resources and (let’s face it) money that a lot of major label artists of our same caliber would have.

But that doesn’t mean that we should stop producing hits or trying to produce hits.

As an indie musician, that means that we are to become more resourceful in the ways that we produce and write our songs.

So let’s talk about how we can do that.

Get better at songwriting

So music can be broken down into 3 distinct phases.

The songwriting phase, the production phase, and the post production phase.

But ultimately it starts with the song.

So as songwriters, it’s essential that we write the best possible songs that we can write.

And you become better at songwriting by learning the fundamentals of a song.

Learning the different parts of a song and what they do in different aspects will go a long way when it comes to writing songs.

Learn the verse, chorus, bridge, intro, and outdo at least to start off with in songwriting. And learn how to form each one.

In everything in music, it’s important to ask the very small and almost idiotic questions in music.

Because those small questions will accumulate to big results.

Get better at production.

Producing music comes down to really recreating a whole bunch of productions that have already been produced.

If you can recreate chart topping singles with ease, then you’re a professional producer.

Of course it helps to understand your DAW and the different parts that make up producing music. General mixing knowledge is super important. For even though you will be producing music, you will have to mix at one point or another.

Last but certainly not least, pray to God.

Ultimately I could give you a million different ways to improve in songwriting, but none of it would matter if you don’t have the time to dedicate to practicing your craft.

And on top of that, there are a million things that can stop you from actually making a career in music, a million things can stop you from even starting music.

But if you pray to God to give you time to make something out of music, the Lord promises to provide.
